My trip to the Capitol, by Dan Noland:
I got up at 04:00, finished packing, and snuck out while attracting as
little attention as possible. Met up with jabbey, dlin,
and cconstantine. We
carpooled down to Indianapolis, and we were in the air by 07:15. We
landed ar Regan National circa 09:40. We successfully navigated the Metro, met up with the other half of
the Arxan crew, and got checked into our
hotel (the Embassy Suites near 10th and New York). We quickly turned
around and took a stroll towards the
Smithsonian campus. On our way there we got distracted and made a
quick detour through the National Archives. We picked
the right time to go, because most everything was completely
deserted. We strolled right up to the Declaration of Independence,
Constitution, and Bill of Rights with only a moments delay for a
security check. From there we headed to the Smithsonian Air
and Space Museum. Being nerds we could not resist. There we
saw prototype planes, spacecraft, and a Cray-1; we also
learned about Ada and the traveling salesman
problem.
Once we had our fill of geekery we made a B-line for International Spy Museum. It was a
bit pricey, but interesting. There was not a whole lot there that you
could not learn about by watching spy shows on The Discovery Channel,
but it was fun to see the stuff first hand. Dinner time was rapidly
approaching so we returned to the hotel, cleaned up, and began
drinking. After the worst happy hour that Paris Hilton, et al could
have possibly provided we grabbed some cabs and rode to Filomena in Georgetown. Apparently
they are quite proud of the fact that a great number of famous people
have eaten there. I am not particularly interested in what famous
people think, but in this case they are correct. The food was
excellent. There we hobnobed with the Arxan big wigs and drank
amaretto and sambuca with three coffee
beans floating in it representing health, wealth, and happiness.
After
dinner we stumbled over to a Georgetown bar where I had some Jameson
with CC and EB. RobWrob and others then decided that they would like to
see the WWII Memorial, unfortunately we had bad
directions to the Metro station and we wandered quite some distance
before we found one. We then made our way to the monument. While we were
out there we figured that we should hit the Lincoln
Memorial and the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial. This is how it came to pass that I was standing on the steps of
the Lincon Memorial when people started sending pictures and text
messages to my phone indicating that Vons is burning
down. By this time the somber news and loaction have dampened our
spirits and we retire for the evening.
At 09:00 Wednesday morning I find myself in the CEO's hotel room
drinking a champagne toast with my fellow Arxanites. We then attended
the presentation to our board of directors. Interesting stuff, but of
course I won't be divulging any details except to say that Avni did a
truly excellent job. After the meeting we had a quick catered lunch
and checked our bags at the front desk. We took the Metro to the capitol
south stop where we saw The United States Botanic
Garden and took a very long tour of the Capitol Building. On our
way back to the Metro we saw the Supreme Court. From there it was back
to the hotel to grab our bags and dinner, back to the airport, and a
short flight put us back in Indy circa 22:20.

I saw Walk the Line last night. It is a good flick, if a bit slow. I tend to enjoy films with Reese Witherspoon and, as so many people have said, it isn't exactly a stretch for a member of the Phoenix family to play a drug addict. The film is definitely worth your time. Johnny Cash was punk rock before there was such a thing as punk rock.
